“just watch me go…”

A man, a plan…
but first, a round of drinks.

A mate of mine commented the other day that now we were out of lockdown he was going to hit the exercise trail hard. In the first instance, said friend announced this whilst down the pub and having consumed the best part of a gallon of lager - naturally, his words, and his timing, were met with laughter and derision.

It was then pointed out that the gym he was throwing into the conversational mix… the walls within which he was going to transform himself from dad bod to lean machine had in fact announced a period of extended closure.

“Of course, with a hearty portion of wit, a dash of self-flagellation and by subtly pointing out obvious inabilities of other members of the group’s ability to pace around a track like Linford Christie, said friend wriggled his way out of an obvious minefield.”

Finally, he wasn’t allowed to evade a further barrage of abuse when it was noted that commencing a fitness regime once out of lockdown was akin to bolting the stable door with the horse halfway across the neighbouring field; and that the true opportunity to shake off those excess pounds had been when he he’d furloughed for the past three months.

Of course, with a hearty portion of wit, a dash of self-flagellation and by subtly pointing out obvious inabilities of other members of the group to pace around a track like Linford Christie, said friend wriggled his way out of an obvious minefield.

And actually, more to the point, I’ve no doubt he will start his health kick over the coming week… which really, is the point.

You see, it doesn’t matter if the commencement of new ideas and principles are delayed by a week or month, as long when they’re put in motion the commitment is full and exacting.

Whether we’re building up to a half-marathon or trying to fill a flatplan a week before deadline, sometimes starting is the hardest part; but many of us, in editorial, in publishing, in business, and in life, have the desire and the wherewithal to succeed, and neither the mocking of mates nor an eight-pint hangover should change that.
